What size dumpster do I need for roofing shingles?Dumpsters for shingles

Madison Dumpster Rental has Dumpsters for All Sizes of Roofing Projects

When you need to tear off a roof you want to make sure you have the correct size “roll-off” dumpster. A roll-off dumpster will typically have a swinging gate in the back, allowing you to walk or wheelbarrow your shingles toward the front of the container. Renting a dumpster for roofing can be a challenge. Ordering the correct size can save you hundreds of dollars on the cost of a dumpster. Use our roofing estimator below to see how many shingles will fit into a dumpster. There are 4 basic types of roofing materials: asphalt shingles, cedar shakes, rubber membrane, and metal sheeting. We will only be addressing asphalt shingles and cedar shakes.

What are the dimensions of a roll-off dumpster for roofing?

What is the price of a 10-, 12-, 20-, or 30-yard dumpster for shingles?

How to Estimate the Size Dumpster You’ll Need for Your Roofing Project

Use this tool to find out how many roofing squares you'll need.

Determine Total Roofing Squares. It is not the same as square footage. If you know how many bundles you need to buy, you're almost there.

3 Shingle bundles = 1 Roofing Square = 100 square feet of roof coverage
3 shingle bundles equal 1 roofing square which covers approximately 100 square feet.
There are 29 shingles per bundle.
Each bundle weighs around 50 pounds.

If you have 2 layers of asphalt shingles on your roof you have a total of 20 square. Be aware – if you are removing cedar shakes you will need a bigger dumpster. For example, if you have 10 roofing squares of cedar shakes to remove you will need a 10yrd container.

If you do not know your Total Roofing Squares use the link below or just ask your roofing company.

Asphalt Shingle - Table

Use the table below to determine what size container you will need for asphalt shingles. Make sure to factor in the number of layers to be removed. For example, 20 square feet of shingle x 2 layers = 40sq ft. Once again, if you have cedar shakes to remove you will need a bigger dumpster. For example - If you have 10 roofing squares of cedar shakes you will need a 10yrd container.  (Math is still your friend!)

Approx. Roof Size Number of Roofing Squares Dumpster Size
2000 ft2 20 8 Yard
2500 ft2 25 10 Yard
3000 ft2 30 12 Yard
3500 ft2 35 15 Yard
5000 ft2 50 20 Yard
7000 ft2 70 30 Yard

How much does a square of asphalt shingles weigh?

The weight can depend on the type of shingle and the manufacturer. The safe weight to use is 250 lbs. per square. This overestimate can account for sheets of plywood, gutters, and pallets that may be disposed of during the roof tear-off process. In some areas, you can dump your shingles for free.

You will have to find a dump nearby to determine if there is a cost in dumping the shingles yourself.

Some road builders recycle asphalt shingles and may accept clean asphalt shingles for free. “Clean shingles” are free from any other trash other than asphalt shingles, tar paper, and nails. We have made it so easy that you can order your dumpster while you are waiting for your roofing materials at your local Home Depot!
