Waste Management Tips: Remodeling

What you NEED to know when renting a Dumpster for your remodeling project

For remodeling, it is recommended to order a dumpster one size bigger than what you think you need. From experience in the past, construction and remodeling projects tend to grow in scope once the demo phase of the project takes place. You can always top off your dumpster rental with household, basement, or garage items if there is any room left over after your project is complete.

Small to Mid-Sized Remodels (Bathrooms and Kitchens)

Bathroom remodels usually require a 10-yard lugger while remodeling multiple rooms requires a 20 or 30-yard roll-off dumpster. If your building’s walls contain large amounts of plaster, a 30-yard dumpster is not recommended due to the amount of weight that can accumulate in such a large container. The box can become so heavy that it cannot be picked up, requiring offloading of materials and an additional dumpster.

What to Know: Remodel Dumpster Rentals

Disposing of Concrete

If you have large amounts of concrete to dispose of you may want to order an 8 to 15-yard container to recycle your concrete. This can save you money in the long run due to the lower costs associated with recycling. The concrete cannot be painted and the load must not have other materials along within it. Small amounts of dirt and stone are acceptable. Concrete needs to be clean to be recycled otherwise normal dumpster pricing terms may apply.

Rental Durations

Rental durations range from 4-60 days. Make sure to pick one that suits your project. Check if extending the rental is possible and how the extension process works. Extensions may be on a daily or weekly basis.

Dumpster Weight

Included in the rental price will be some disposal measured in tons. Remodeling projects are typically “medium” in terms of weight. Estimating the weight depends on the items being thrown away and the size of the dumpster. Boxes that are “medium” in weight contain cabinets, carpet, drywall, and wood. Dumpsters that are heavy include items like plaster, concrete, and shingles. A “medium” disposal weight for a 20-yard dumpster is about 3 tons. A “medium” disposal weight for a 30-yard dumpster is about 4 tons.

How to choose your size

Typically, remodeling projects use a 20 or 30-cubic-yard dumpster. There are three basic sizes of dumpsters 12, 20, and 30 cubic yards (small, medium, and large). The small 12-yard dumpster holds a pile of trash about the size of a midsize car. One cubic yard is about the size of a kitchen stove. Size up when in doubt as a larger dumpster is less expensive than ordering a second one. Items may not stick above the top rim so make sure your largest items will fit.

Considerations for placement

Place your dumpster in the driveway to avoid street permits and illegal dumping. Place boards down on the driveway to protect it. Alley placements are a challenge due to lower wires and smaller areas to drive. Do not expect large trucks to deliver large containers to tight areas. Trucks cannot deliver in areas with low branches or wires. Depending on the style of the dumpster ordered, the truck will need the following space to make the delivery: 40-60 feet in a straight line, 12-30 vertical feet, 8.5-15 feet in width. These figures are approximate, call if in doubt.

Loading the Dumpster

Load big and long items first. Fill in the gaps with small and light items. Break down all items as you are loading to save space. Hammers and saws can be helpful to break items down. You can only load a dumpster to the rim.

Accepted and Restricted Items

Commonly restricted items are liquids, paint cans, electronics, refrigerators, washers, dryers, dirt, asphalt, asbestos, and large amounts of concrete. Commonly allowed items are wood, drywall, PVC pipes, metals (like stainless steel and aluminum), cabinets, and nails.

Dumpster Delivery Tips

Dumpsters can be delivered in as little as 24 hours, but it is recommended to order a week ahead of time in case the schedule is full. While specific delivery times can be attempted, the dumpster may be delivered anytime throughout the day. Have the dumpster delivered the business day before you need to use it. For projects happening over the weekend, have the dumpster delivered on Thursday.

Delivery Day

On delivery day keep the space for the dumpster unblocked and ready to go the entire day. On the day of removal do not park in front of a dumpster and make sure the dumpster is not overloaded. These will help to avoid extra fees.
